Chamomile tea is made from dried Chrysanthemum morifolium (white chrysanthemum) or Chrysanthemum indicum (yellow chrysanthemum) flowers, most commonly in East Asia.
This is an herbal tea that has cooling and detoxifying effects. Some benefits from this tea:
- Chamomile tea contains many flavones that helps reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol, prevents symptoms such as dizziness, insomnia and headaches.
- According to Asian beliefs, chamomile contains apigenin which has the ability to fight cancer cells, especially breast, gastrointestinal, skin, prostate and uterine cancers.
- In addition, chamomile tea helps stabilize blood sugar levels, relieve nervous tension, soothe menstrual cramps naturally, also has antibacterial properties.
According to traditional medicine, chamomile tea has some benefits such as supporting sleep, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and liver protection, reducing premenstrual symptoms, improving blood sugar level, insulin levels, and blood lipids level.
Although chamomile tea has many wonderful uses, but there are also some limitations to this tea:
- Because the properties of chamomile tea are cold, it can make the body cold. Thus, pregnant women should not use chamomile tea, because it can reduce the immune system, and experience symptoms of discomfort, flatulence, and bloating.
- Chamomile tea contains pollen that can cause allergies, so people with allergies should not use this tea.
- Because the cooling properties of chamomile tea reduce the immune system, people who are suffering from colds, sore throats or fatigue should not drink chamomile tea also.
